Fences don’t last forever. Wind, rain, rot, and the occasional accidental collision with a reversing car all take their toll. Eventually, panels start leaning, posts give way at ground level, and what was once a solid boundary becomes something of an embarrassment. The question then becomes whether to patch things up or start fresh.
Stanley Paving has been installing and repairing fencing across Essex and Suffolk for over twenty years. We’re based in Wickham Bishops and work throughout both counties, from Colchester and Chelmsford through to Ipswich and Bury St Edmunds. What Good Fencing Actually Does
Beyond marking where your property ends and the neighbour’s begins, fencing serves several practical purposes. Privacy is the obvious one—nobody wants to feel overlooked whilst relaxing in their own garden. Security matters too, particularly if you have children or dogs who need a safely enclosed space to play.
Wind protection is often underestimated. A solid fence creates a sheltered microclimate that makes outdoor spaces usable on days when an open garden would be distinctly unpleasant. Plants benefit as well; a properly positioned fence shields tender specimens from the worst of what East Anglian weather can throw at them.
And yes, appearance counts. A sagging, moss-covered fence draped with ivy does nothing for any property. Replace it with something well-constructed and properly finished, and the difference is immediately apparent.

Closeboard & Featheredge
This is the heavyweight option. Vertical boards overlap to create a solid, robust barrier with no gaps. Built properly with concrete posts and gravel boards at the base, closeboard fencing handles wind, resists rot where it matters most, and typically outlasts lighter alternatives by a considerable margin. It’s what we recommend for main boundaries and anywhere strength genuinely matters.
Lap Panel Fencing
Pre-made panels with horizontal overlapping boards. Quicker to install and generally more affordable than closeboard, making lap panels a sensible choice for many domestic situations. They’re not as robust—particularly in exposed positions—but for sheltered gardens with moderate requirements, they do the job perfectly well. Panels are easily replaced individually if damage occurs.
Picket Fencing
The traditional choice for front gardens where you want to define a boundary without blocking sightlines or light. Works particularly well with period properties and cottage-style gardens.
Trellis & Decorative
Trellis tops can add height to existing fencing without creating an oppressive solid wall, and they’re ideal for supporting climbing plants. We also install hit-and-miss designs and contemporary slatted styles.
Composite Fencing
Composite boards combine recycled wood fibres with plastic polymers to create a material that looks like timber but doesn’t rot, warp, or require regular treatment. The initial cost is higher, but ongoing maintenance is minimal.
What We Do
New Installations: Complete fencing from scratch, including removal and disposal of old materials if needed. We handle everything from initial groundwork through to final finishing.
Repairs: Storm damage, rotten posts, broken panels—we can fix individual problems without replacing entire runs. Where sections need replacing, we match existing fencing as closely as possible.
Gates: Side gates, garden gates, and access gates to match your fencing. Made to measure where standard sizes don’t suit.
Post and Rail: For larger properties, paddocks, or situations where solid panels aren’t appropriate. Post and rail provides boundary definition without the visual weight of solid fencing.
How We Work
Every fencing job starts with a site visit. We need to see the ground conditions, understand what’s currently there, and discuss exactly what you’re hoping to achieve. You’ll receive a written quotation that breaks down materials and labour clearly.
Dealing With Slopes
Gardens in Essex and Suffolk are rarely completely flat. We handle sloping ground in two ways: stepped installation, where panels are set at different heights following the gradient, or raked panels that are cut at an angle to follow the slope smoothly.

How long does fence installation take?
A typical garden boundary of 15-20 metres usually takes one to two days. Larger properties, difficult access, or challenging ground conditions extend this accordingly. We’ll give you a realistic timescale when we quote.
What's the difference between closeboard and lap panels?
Closeboard fencing is built in situ using individual vertical boards nailed to horizontal rails. It’s stronger, more durable, and can be constructed to any height or length. Lap panels are pre-made, quicker to install, and generally less expensive—but they’re not as robust and won’t last as long in exposed positions.
Do I need concrete posts?
Not necessarily, but they do last longer than timber posts, which rot at ground level regardless of treatment. Concrete posts with gravel boards are particularly worthwhile in damp conditions or where longevity is the priority. We can discuss the options and explain the cost difference.
Can you repair just part of my fence?
Usually, yes. Individual panels can be replaced, damaged posts can be swapped out, and specific sections can be rebuilt without touching the rest. We’ll match existing materials as closely as possible, though perfect matches aren’t always achievable with older or discontinued products.
What about boundaries shared with neighbours?
We recommend checking your property deeds to establish ownership before replacing shared boundary fencing. A conversation with neighbours is always sensible—most disputes arise from assumptions rather than actual disagreement. If you’re uncertain about boundary positions, we can work to measurements you provide, but resolving ownership questions falls outside our remit.
