Natural Stone Paving
There’s something about natural stone that manufactured materials simply can’t replicate. The subtle variations in colour, the way light catches the surface differently across each slab, the sense of genuine geological authenticity.

Natural Stone Paving in Essex and Suffolk
Stanley Paving has been installing natural stone driveways, patios and pathways across Essex and Suffolk for over twenty years. We’re based in Wickham Bishops and work throughout both counties, from Colchester and Chelmsford through to Ipswich, Bury St Edmunds and the coastal towns. Our focus has always been on proper installation—the kind that’s still looking good decades later—rather than quick jobs that develop problems within a few years.
What Sets Natural Stone Apart
Natural stone means exactly that—materials quarried from the earth rather than manufactured. Indian sandstone, limestone, granite, slate, Yorkshire stone. Each type has its own characteristics, its own strengths and limitations. What they share is authenticity. Every piece carries natural variation in tone and texture, which means no two installations look identical.
The practical advantages matter too. Quality natural stone, properly installed, can outlast the buildings it serves. We’ve seen Victorian-era stone paving that’s still perfectly functional after a century and more of use. That kind of longevity isn’t guaranteed—it depends on choosing the right stone for the application and installing it correctly—but it’s achievable in a way that simply isn’t possible with most manufactured alternatives.
Our Natural Stone Options
Each stone type has its own characteristics, strengths and ideal applications. We’ll help you choose the perfect material for your project.
Indian Sandstone
The most popular choice for patios and many driveways. Available in a wide range of colours—from the grey-blues of Kandla Grey through to the warm buffs and browns of Raj blends. Good durability at a reasonable price point.
Limestone
A more refined appearance than sandstone, with a smoother surface and more consistent colouring. Black limestone has become particularly popular for contemporary designs, while lighter shades suit traditional properties.
Granite
The hardest and most durable option. Granite setts and cobbles have paved roads for centuries and remain practically indestructible under normal residential use. More expensive than sandstone, but essentially a lifetime purchase.
Slate
Distinctive riven texture and subtle colour variations make slate a striking choice for contemporary gardens. It’s frost-resistant and hardwearing. Works particularly well for pathways and feature areas.
How We Install Natural Stone
The visible stonework is only part of the story. What happens underneath determines whether that surface remains level and intact for decades or develops problems within a few years. We spend considerable time on groundwork precisely because it’s the foundation everything else depends on.
Proper installation begins with excavation to the correct depth—typically 200-250mm for driveways, depending on ground conditions and expected loading. We lay a geotextile membrane to prevent weed growth and stop sub-base material migrating into the soil below. The sub-base itself is compacted MOT Type 1 aggregate, laid in layers and consolidated to create a stable platform.
Stone is bedded on a sand and cement mortar mix, with each piece checked for level and adjusted as needed. Joint widths are kept consistent throughout. Once the mortar has set, joints are pointed with appropriate compound—the choice depending on the stone type and the look you’re after.
“Twenty years of laying natural stone across Essex and Suffolk means we’ve encountered most of the challenges the region presents. The heavy clay soils in parts of both counties, which can move seasonally and need adequate sub-base depth to accommodate. The sandy ground elsewhere, which drains well but requires different preparation. Coastal exposure around Clacton, Harwich and Felixstowe, where salt-laden air affects some stone types more than others.
We source stone from suppliers we’ve worked with for years and trust to provide consistent quality. That matters more than you might think—cheap imported stone can look acceptable initially but deteriorate rapidly, especially through freeze-thaw cycles in British winters.”

Low Maintenance
Regular sweeping to remove debris, an annual pressure wash if needed, and that’s largely it. Some stones benefit from sealing—we’ll advise on what’s appropriate for your situation.
Is natural stone more expensive than block paving?
Generally yes, both for materials and installation. The gap varies depending on the stone chosen—Indian sandstone isn’t dramatically more than quality block paving, while granite is substantially more expensive. What you’re paying for is a surface that should last significantly longer and develop character rather than simply wearing out.
Can natural stone support heavy vehicles?
With appropriate stone selection and proper sub-base preparation, yes. Granite and good quality sandstone handle regular car traffic without difficulty. For heavier vehicles or commercial applications, we specify thicker stone and more substantial foundations. We’ll assess your requirements during the site visit.
How long will installation take?
Typically one to two weeks for a standard driveway, depending on size and complexity. Patios are often quicker—perhaps three to five days for a typical installation. We’ll provide a realistic timeframe in your quotation, along with any factors that might affect scheduling.
Do you also install patios and pathways?
Absolutely. Natural stone patios are actually our most common project. The same principles apply—proper preparation, quality materials, careful installation. Many customers have us do both driveway and patio work together, using complementary stones or matching materials throughout.
What areas in Essex and Suffolk do you cover?
From our base in Wickham Bishops, we cover most of Essex and Suffolk. Regular working areas include Colchester, Chelmsford, Braintree, Witham, Maldon, Brentwood, Billericay, Southend-on-Sea, Basildon, Clacton-on-Sea, Ipswich, Bury St Edmunds, Sudbury, Felixstowe, Woodbridge, and surrounding towns and villages. If your location isn’t listed, get in touch anyway—we can usually accommodate projects within reasonable distance.
How do I look after natural stone paving?
One of the genuine advantages of natural stone is relatively low maintenance. Regular sweeping to remove debris, an annual pressure wash if the surface becomes dirty or develops algae growth, and that’s largely it for most installations. Some stones benefit from sealing—it enhances colour and provides some stain protection—though it’s not always necessary. We’ll advise on what’s appropriate for your particular stone and situation.
