What Makes a Good Patio
Size matters, but not in the way people often assume. A patio that’s too small feels cramped and ends up underused. But one that’s too large can dominate a modest garden and look out of proportion. The right size depends on how you’ll actually use the space.
Size & Position
Position matters too. South-facing catches the sun but may need shade in summer. North-facing stays cooler but can feel damp. Close to the house is convenient but might block light to interior rooms.
Proper Foundations
A patio is only as good as its foundations. Skimp on the sub-base and you’ll get movement, cracking, and drainage problems within a few years. We excavate to proper depth and lay compacted aggregate.
Drainage
We ensure adequate falls so water drains away from the house rather than pooling on the surface or—worse—finding its way into the building. Proper drainage prevents long-term damage.
Material Options
Choose from a range of quality materials to suit your style, budget, and garden.
Natural Stone
Indian sandstone remains the most popular choice for good reason—attractive natural variation, proven durability, and reasonable cost compared to British stone. Colours range from grey-blues through to warm buffs and browns. Limestone offers a more refined, consistent appearance that suits formal settings. Slate provides distinctive texture for contemporary designs. Granite is the hardest option, practically indestructible but correspondingly more expensive.
Porcelain
The material that’s transformed patio options over the past decade. Porcelain slabs are manufactured to precise dimensions, making them easier to lay with consistent joints. They’re non-porous, so they don’t stain or harbour algae the way natural stone can. Available in an enormous range of finishes—stone-effect, wood-effect, concrete-effect—and colours. The trade-off is a more uniform appearance that some find too perfect, lacking the character of natural materials.
Block Paving
More commonly associated with driveways, but block paving works for patios too, particularly where you want visual continuity with an existing block-paved drive. The interlocking nature provides structural strength, and there’s plenty of scope for decorative patterns. Generally more affordable than natural stone, with the flexibility to create curves and intricate designs.
How We Work
Every project starts with a site visit. We need to see the space, understand the ground conditions, discuss what you’re hoping to achieve, and identify any complications—access for materials, proximity to trees, existing drainage, level changes. This initial consultation is free and typically takes 45 minutes to an hour.
Following the visit, we provide a written quotation covering materials, labour, and any additional work required. The quote is detailed enough that you know exactly what’s included—and what isn’t. We explain the options, discuss trade-offs between different approaches, and give you time to consider without pressure.
Installation follows a methodical sequence. Excavation to the required depth—typically 150-200mm depending on ground conditions and paving thickness. Edge restraints to hold everything in place. Compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base, laid in layers. Then the paving itself, bedded on mortar or an appropriate alternative depending on the material. Finally, jointing and any finishing work.

Looking After Your Patio
One of the genuine advantages of a patio over lawn or decking is relatively low maintenance. Regular sweeping to clear debris. An annual clean with a pressure washer if algae or dirt builds up—though be careful with high pressure on natural stone, which can damage the surface. Occasional attention to joints if they start to erode or weeds appear.
Some natural stones benefit from sealing, which enhances colour and provides stain protection. Others are better left unsealed. Porcelain generally needs nothing beyond cleaning. We’ll advise on what’s appropriate for your particular paving and situation.
Common Questions
How much does a patio cost?
That depends on size, materials, and complexity. A basic patio in budget materials might start around £80-100 per square metre installed. Quality natural stone or porcelain typically runs £120-180 per square metre. Premium materials, complex designs, or difficult access can push costs higher. We provide detailed quotations so you know exactly what you’re paying for.
Do I need planning permission?
Usually not for a standard garden patio. Exceptions may apply if you’re in a conservation area, your property is listed, or the patio would cover a large proportion of your garden. Drainage regulations can also be relevant if you’re paving a significant area—permeable paving or soakaways may be required. We’ll flag any potential issues during our assessment.
Can you build patios on sloped gardens?
Yes—slopes actually offer interesting design possibilities. Split-level patios connected by steps, terraced areas that work with the natural contours, or retaining walls that create usable flat space. These projects require more planning and typically cost more than level sites, but the results can be striking. We’ll assess what’s practical during the site visit.
What's the best time of year to install a patio?
We work year-round, though spring and autumn are often ideal—ground conditions are usually good and you avoid both the saturated ground of winter and the peak demand of summer. That said, we’ve installed plenty of patios in every season. Weather affects specific stages rather than making work impossible, so don’t assume you need to wait for perfect conditions.
How long does a patio take to install?
Timescales vary with size and complexity. A straightforward 20 square metre patio typically takes three to five days. Larger projects, those involving steps or retaining walls, or complicated access can take longer. Weather affects scheduling too—some stages need dry conditions. We provide realistic timeframes upfront and keep you informed if circumstances change.
