Gravel Driveway Installers Serving Essex & Suffolk
Stanley Paving has been laying gravel driveways across Essex and Suffolk for over 15 years. We know the ground conditions in this part of the country — from the heavy clay soils around Chelmsford to the sandier ground near the coast — and we prepare every sub-base accordingly. That matters, because a gravel driveway is only as good as what sits underneath it.
Based in Wickham Bishops, we work with homeowners throughout Maldon, Witham, Braintree, Colchester, and across into Suffolk. Whether you need a new driveway from scratch or want to replace a tired tarmac surface, we handle the full job: excavation, sub-base preparation, membrane installation, edging, and the final gravel finish.
How We Install Your Gravel Driveway
Every gravel driveway we install follows a proven process. Shortcuts here lead to problems later — sunken patches, waterlogging, gravel spreading onto pavements — so we don’t take them.
Excavation, Sub-Base & Gravel Finish
We start by excavating the existing surface to the correct depth — typically 200mm or more depending on ground conditions. A heavy-duty weed membrane goes down first, followed by a compacted MOT Type 1 or Type 3 sub-base. This is the part that gives your driveway its strength and drainage performance.
For the surface, we install a cellular grid system at a depth of around 20mm. This keeps the gravel locked in place, prevents ruts forming under vehicle tyres, and stops loose stones migrating onto footpaths. The grid also means the finished surface is fully SUDS compliant — so there’s no need for planning permission on standard domestic installations.
We finish with your chosen decorative gravel and install edging in natural stone, granite setts, or block paving borders to frame the driveway and contain the surface. The result is a driveway that drains properly, holds its shape, and genuinely looks the part.
Gravel Driveway Options & Colour Choices
One of the biggest advantages of gravel is the sheer range of finishes available. We carry samples from quality aggregate suppliers so you can see exactly how different stones look against your brickwork before committing.
Decorative Gravel Types for Essex Properties
We source our gravel from established quarries across the UK. Popular choices amongst our Essex customers include Cotswold Chippings for a warm golden tone, Grey Limestone for a cleaner modern look, and Cheshire Pink for something a bit different. We also stock Ice Blue, Green Granite, and Yorkshire Cream — all hard-wearing and suitable for driveways with regular vehicle traffic.
Pea shingle remains a cost-effective option where budget is a factor, particularly on longer driveways or private access roads. For a more premium finish, polished pebbles or slate chippings offer a distinctive look that holds up well over time. During our site visit, we’ll bring samples so you can match the gravel to your property’s brickwork and surroundings.
Gravel Patios Built for Essex Gardens
Gravel isn’t just for driveways. It works brilliantly as a patio surface too — particularly in larger gardens where paving the entire area would push the budget. We install gravel patios throughout Essex using the same sub-base preparation and cellular grid system as our driveways, so you get a solid, level surface that drains freely and won’t turn to mud in wet weather.
Most homeowners use a gravel patio to extend their usable outdoor space without the cost of natural stone or porcelain slabs. It’s a practical choice for seating areas, fire pit surrounds, garden bar spaces, or as a transition between a paved patio and the lawn. We can also combine gravel with stepping stones or sleeper edging to break up the area and add structure.
The installation process is straightforward. We excavate to the required depth, lay a compacted sub-base and weed membrane, install edging to contain the surface, and finish with your chosen decorative gravel. If you already have a patio area that’s looking tired or uneven, gravel can go straight over existing hardstanding in many cases — which keeps costs down and avoids the hassle of a full dig-out.
Benefits of a Gravel Driveway
Gravel driveways remain one of the most popular surfacing options across Essex — and with good reason. They’re significantly cheaper than block paving or resin bound surfaces, particularly when you need to cover a large area. A 60m² driveway in gravel can cost less than half of what you’d pay for the same space in block paving.
Then there’s the drainage. Because gravel sits on a permeable sub-base, rainwater passes straight through rather than pooling on the surface. That means your driveway automatically complies with Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) regulations — no soakaways needed and no planning permission required in most cases.
There’s a practical security benefit too. Gravel makes a distinctive crunching noise under foot or tyre, which acts as an early warning when someone approaches your property. It’s a detail that matters more than most people realise, and something the police actually recommend for residential crime prevention.
Maintenance is straightforward: an occasional rake to redistribute the surface, a top-up of fresh gravel every few years, and a spray of weedkiller along the edges. That’s about it. No repointing, no pressure washing, no cracked slabs to replace.

Frequently Asked Questions About Gravel Driveways
How much does a gravel driveway cost in Essex?
Prices vary depending on the size of the area, the type of gravel selected, and the amount of groundwork required. As a general guide, most gravel driveways in Essex fall between £50 and £70 per square metre fully installed. For a typical two-car driveway (around 40m²), expect to pay somewhere between £2,000 and £3,500 including all materials, labour, and waste removal. We provide free site visits and written quotes so you’ll know the exact cost before any work begins.
Do I need planning permission for a gravel driveway?
In most cases, no. Because gravel is a permeable surface, it falls under permitted development rights and doesn’t require planning permission for standard domestic properties. This is one of the real advantages of gravel over non-porous materials like concrete or certain types of block paving. If your property is listed or in a conservation area, it’s worth checking with your local council first — but for the vast majority of Essex homes, you can go ahead without any special approvals.
What type of gravel is best for a driveway?
For driveways with regular vehicle use, we generally recommend angular crushed stone at around 20mm. Angular gravel locks together better than rounded stone and resists displacement under tyres. Popular choices include Cotswold Chippings, Grey Limestone, and Cheshire Pink — all of which are hard-wearing and available in a range of natural tones. Pea shingle works well for pathways and lighter-use areas but tends to shift more on driveways. We’ll advise on the best option for your specific property during the site visit.
How long does it take to install a gravel driveway?
Most residential gravel driveways take between one and three days to complete. A standard single or double driveway on reasonably flat ground is usually finished within two days. Larger areas, private access roads, or sites that need significant excavation may take a little longer. We’ll give you a clear timescale when we quote, and we stick to it.
How do you stop gravel from spreading everywhere?
This is one of the most common concerns — and it’s a fair one. We install a cellular grid system beneath the gravel surface which holds the stones firmly in place and prevents them from migrating onto paths or into flower beds. We also lay solid edging around the perimeter of the driveway, typically in block paving, natural stone, or granite setts. At the driveway entrance, a paved threshold strip stops gravel being tracked onto the public footpath.
What areas do you cover for gravel driveway installations?
We’re based in Wickham Bishops, near Maldon, and we cover the whole of Essex and parts of Suffolk. Our regular working areas include Chelmsford, Witham, Braintree, Colchester, Tiptree, Basildon, Brentwood, Billericay, Southend-on-Sea, and Romford. In Suffolk, we work around Sudbury, Hadleigh, and the wider Ipswich area. If you’re unsure whether we cover your location, just give us a call.
Is a gravel driveway hard to maintain?
Not at all — it’s one of the lowest-maintenance driveway options available. You’ll need to rake the surface occasionally to keep it even, apply weedkiller along the edges a couple of times a year, and top up with fresh gravel every three to four years. That’s about it. Unlike block paving, there’s no repointing to worry about. Unlike tarmac, there are no cracks to repair. If an oil stain appears, you simply scrape away the affected gravel and replace it.
