Frequently Asked Questions About Gravel Driveways

How much does a gravel driveway cost in Essex?

Prices vary depending on the size of the area, the type of gravel selected, and the amount of groundwork required. As a general guide, most gravel driveways in Essex fall between £50 and £70 per square metre fully installed. For a typical two-car driveway (around 40m²), expect to pay somewhere between £2,000 and £3,500 including all materials, labour, and waste removal. We provide free site visits and written quotes so you’ll know the exact cost before any work begins.

Do I need planning permission for a gravel driveway?

In most cases, no. Because gravel is a permeable surface, it falls under permitted development rights and doesn’t require planning permission for standard domestic properties. This is one of the real advantages of gravel over non-porous materials like concrete or certain types of block paving. If your property is listed or in a conservation area, it’s worth checking with your local council first — but for the vast majority of Essex homes, you can go ahead without any special approvals.

What type of gravel is best for a driveway?

For driveways with regular vehicle use, we generally recommend angular crushed stone at around 20mm. Angular gravel locks together better than rounded stone and resists displacement under tyres. Popular choices include Cotswold Chippings, Grey Limestone, and Cheshire Pink — all of which are hard-wearing and available in a range of natural tones. Pea shingle works well for pathways and lighter-use areas but tends to shift more on driveways. We’ll advise on the best option for your specific property during the site visit.

How long does it take to install a gravel driveway?

Most residential gravel driveways take between one and three days to complete. A standard single or double driveway on reasonably flat ground is usually finished within two days. Larger areas, private access roads, or sites that need significant excavation may take a little longer. We’ll give you a clear timescale when we quote, and we stick to it.

How do you stop gravel from spreading everywhere?

This is one of the most common concerns — and it’s a fair one. We install a cellular grid system beneath the gravel surface which holds the stones firmly in place and prevents them from migrating onto paths or into flower beds. We also lay solid edging around the perimeter of the driveway, typically in block paving, natural stone, or granite setts. At the driveway entrance, a paved threshold strip stops gravel being tracked onto the public footpath.

What areas do you cover for gravel driveway installations?

We’re based in Wickham Bishops, near Maldon, and we cover the whole of Essex and parts of Suffolk. Our regular working areas include Chelmsford, Witham, Braintree, Colchester, Tiptree, Basildon, Brentwood, Billericay, Southend-on-Sea, and Romford. In Suffolk, we work around Sudbury, Hadleigh, and the wider Ipswich area. If you’re unsure whether we cover your location, just give us a call.

Is a gravel driveway hard to maintain?

Not at all — it’s one of the lowest-maintenance driveway options available. You’ll need to rake the surface occasionally to keep it even, apply weedkiller along the edges a couple of times a year, and top up with fresh gravel every three to four years. That’s about it. Unlike block paving, there’s no repointing to worry about. Unlike tarmac, there are no cracks to repair. If an oil stain appears, you simply scrape away the affected gravel and replace it.
