Landscaping Services in Essex and Suffolk
Most gardens have potential that’s never quite realised. A patchy lawn, a patio that’s too small for proper use, planting beds that looked promising once but now harbour more weeds than flowers. The space exists, but it’s not working as hard as it could. That’s where thoughtful landscaping makes the difference — turning an outdoor area you walk past into one you actually want to spend time in.
Stanley Paving has been designing and building gardens across Essex and Suffolk for over twenty years. We’re based in Wickham Bishops and work throughout both counties, from Colchester and Chelmsford through to Ipswich and Bury St Edmunds. Our projects range from straightforward patio installations to complete garden transformations — the common thread being practical design and construction that stands up to actual use.
What Landscaping Actually Involves
The term gets used loosely, but professional landscaping typically combines two elements. Hard landscaping covers the built structures — patios, pathways, walls, steps, raised beds, drainage. Soft landscaping deals with the living components: lawns, planting, trees, hedges. A well-designed garden integrates both so they work together rather than looking like separate afterthoughts.
Good design considers how you’ll actually use the space. A young family needs different things from a retired couple. Someone who entertains regularly has different priorities from someone who wants a private retreat. The garden’s orientation matters — where sun falls at different times, which areas stay damp, where wind funnels through. These factors shape practical decisions about layout, materials, and planting.
What We Do
From patios and pathways to complete garden transformations — our comprehensive landscaping services cover every aspect of your outdoor space.
Patios and Pathways
The foundation of most garden designs. We work with natural stone, porcelain, block paving, and Indian sandstone depending on the look you’re after and the budget available. Proper installation means adequate foundations, correct falls for drainage, and pointing that won’t crack and crumble within a couple of seasons. A well-laid patio should last decades with minimal maintenance.
Lawns and Turfing
Whether you want traditional turf or artificial grass, preparation makes the difference between success and disappointment. For real lawns, that means proper soil preparation, appropriate turf selection, and advice on establishment care. For artificial grass, it’s about correct sub-base construction and drainage so you don’t end up with puddles or an uneven surface. We handle both.
Planting and Soft Landscaping
Plants bring a garden to life, but choosing the wrong ones creates ongoing problems. We select species that suit your soil type, aspect, and the amount of attention you’re realistically going to give them. There’s no point installing a high-maintenance border if you’d rather be enjoying the garden than constantly working in it.
Garden Features
Raised beds, retaining walls, pergolas, decking, fencing, outdoor lighting — the elements that give a garden character and functionality. We build these properly, with appropriate foundations and fixings, so they remain sound and safe for years. Integration with the overall design ensures features enhance rather than dominate the space.
Complete Garden Transformations
Sometimes a garden needs more than incremental improvements. For full redesigns, we manage the entire process: initial design, site clearance, groundworks, construction, planting, and finishing. Having one team handle everything from start to completion avoids the coordination headaches and finger-pointing that can arise when multiple contractors are involved.
How We Work
Every project begins with a site visit. We need to see the space, understand its challenges and opportunities, and hear what you’re hoping to achieve. This initial consultation typically takes 45 minutes to an hour and costs nothing. It’s an opportunity for both sides to assess whether we’re a good fit for the project.
Following the visit, we prepare a detailed proposal covering recommended works, materials, and costs. For larger projects, we can provide sketch designs or more detailed plans. We’ll explain the options, discuss trade-offs between different approaches, and help you understand what’s achievable within your budget.
Once you’ve decided to proceed, we schedule the work and keep you informed throughout. Our teams work tidily, protect areas not under construction, and clean up properly at the end of each day. On completion, we walk through the finished garden with you, explain any maintenance requirements, and make sure you’re happy with everything before we consider the job done.

Local Knowledge
Two decades of landscaping in Essex and Suffolk means we understand local conditions — the heavy clay soils, exposed coastal positions, and sandy ground inland. These factors influence material choices, drainage, and plant selection.
Meet Matt — Your Landscaping Expert
With over two decades of landscaping experience across Essex and Suffolk, Matt founded Stanley Paving with a simple philosophy: do excellent work and treat customers the way you’d want to be treated.
“I’ve seen too many gardens with potential that’s never quite realised. We take the time to understand how you actually want to use your outdoor space, then design and build something that works for your life — not just for the brochure photos.”
Matt personally oversees every project from initial consultation through to completion, ensuring the same standards that built our reputation are maintained on every job.
Questions We’re Often Asked
Can you work with a limited budget?
Yes. Not every garden needs a complete transformation. Sometimes a well-designed patio or a properly laid lawn makes all the difference. We can suggest where investment will have most impact and help you prioritise if budget constraints mean tackling a project in phases.
Do you handle the design as well as the construction?
We do. For straightforward projects, design often emerges through discussion during the consultation. For more complex gardens, we can provide detailed plans and planting schemes. If you already have designs from a garden designer, we’re equally happy to work from those.
What about ongoing maintenance?
We offer maintenance services for customers who’d rather not handle upkeep themselves. Regular visits for lawn care, pruning, weeding, and seasonal tasks keep gardens looking their best without demanding your time. We can discuss maintenance packages once your landscaping is complete.
Do I need planning permission?
Most domestic landscaping falls under permitted development and doesn’t require planning permission. Exceptions exist for listed buildings, conservation areas, and certain types of work affecting boundaries or drainage. If your project might need approval, we’ll flag this during our consultation.
How long do landscaping projects typically take?
Timescales vary considerably depending on scope. A straightforward patio installation might take a week. Turfing a medium-sized lawn is often completed in two or three days. A complete garden transformation — clearance, groundworks, hard landscaping, planting — typically runs four to eight weeks for an average-sized garden. Weather affects scheduling, particularly for work involving concrete or freshly laid turf. We provide realistic timeframes in our quotations and keep you updated if circumstances change.
Where do you work?
From our base in Wickham Bishops, we cover most of Essex and Suffolk. Regular working areas include Colchester, Chelmsford, Braintree, Witham, Maldon, Brentwood, Billericay, Southend-on-Sea, Basildon, Clacton-on-Sea, Ipswich, Bury St Edmunds, Sudbury, Felixstowe, Woodbridge, and the surrounding towns and villages. Not listed? Get in touch anyway. We can usually accommodate projects within reasonable travelling distance.
