Resin Bound Driveways in Essex and Suffolk
Resin bound surfacing has become the driveway material of choice for homeowners who want something that looks contemporary, drains properly, and doesn’t demand constant attention. The appeal is straightforward: a smooth, seamless finish with no loose stones to migrate onto the lawn or into the house. Water passes through rather than pooling on top. And the range of aggregate colours means you’re not stuck with grey or black.
Stanley Paving has been installing resin bound driveways across Essex and Suffolk for over twenty years. We were fitting them before they became fashionable, and we’ve seen the difference between installations that last and those that fail prematurely. The material itself is excellent—when it’s installed correctly on a properly prepared base. Get either of those wrong and problems emerge within a few years.
Understanding Resin Bound Surfacing
The term gets confused with resin bonded, which is a different system entirely. With resin bound, aggregate and resin are mixed together in a forced-action mixer before being trowelled onto the surface. Every stone gets coated, and the result is a solid, porous matrix with small voids that allow water through. With resin bonded, loose aggregate is scattered onto wet resin—it looks similar initially but the stones can work loose over time, and the surface isn’t permeable.
That permeability matters. Since 2008, planning regulations have required new or replacement driveways over five square metres to either use permeable surfacing or direct rainwater to a lawn or soakaway. Resin bound systems—installed on an appropriate porous base—meet Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) requirements without additional drainage work. Resin bonded doesn’t.
Why Choose Resin Bound
The practical advantages stack up. No loose stones tracking everywhere. No puddles forming after rain. A surface that stays relatively clean because dirt doesn’t embed easily. Weed growth is minimal and the textured finish provides decent grip in wet conditions.
Aesthetic Options & Durability
Aesthetically, the options have expanded considerably. Natural aggregates come in everything from warm golden tones through to cool silvers and deep charcoals. Blends allow subtle variations and custom looks. The finish can complement traditional properties or suit contemporary architecture equally well. Unlike block paving, there are no joints to fill or repoint. Unlike tarmac, you’re not limited to black.
Durability depends heavily on specification and installation. A well-installed resin bound driveway using quality UV-stable resin and properly graded aggregate should last fifteen to twenty-five years with minimal maintenance. We use BBA-approved materials precisely because cutting corners on resin quality undermines everything else.
How Installation Works
The base determines everything. Resin bound surfacing is typically 15-18mm thick—it’s a wearing course, not a structural layer. It needs something solid and stable underneath. For new installations, that means excavating to adequate depth, laying compacted MOT Type 1 aggregate, then a layer of open-textured porous tarmac or specialist resin-bound base material.
Overlay installations are possible where an existing surface is structurally sound—typically concrete or tarmac that’s free from significant cracking or movement. The resin and aggregate are mixed on site in precise ratios using forced-action mixers. Working time is limited—typically twenty to thirty minutes depending on temperature—so installation proceeds in sections.
Professional Resin Bound Services Throughout Essex & Suffolk
We offer full installations from excavation through to finished surface, including all groundwork, drainage, and edging. Overlay installations where existing surfaces are suitable. Replacement of failed resin driveways—unfortunately not uncommon, given the number of poorly-specified installations around. Repairs to damaged sections, matching aggregate as closely as possible.
We also install resin bound surfaces for patios, paths, and pool surrounds—anywhere you want the same smooth, permeable, low-maintenance finish. The material works well for these applications, though specification may differ slightly from driveways depending on expected use.

Low Maintenance Surface
One of resin bound’s genuine selling points is low maintenance. Regular brushing removes leaves and debris. Occasional washing with a pressure washer keeps the surface clean—though avoid excessive pressure.
BBA Approved Materials
We use only BBA-approved UV-stable resins and quality aggregates. Cheaper systems using inferior resin can fade, yellow, or become brittle within five years. We don’t cut corners.
SUDS Compliant
Resin bound systems meet Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems requirements without additional drainage work. Planning compliant for driveways over five square metres since 2008 regulations.
Meet the Stanley Paving Team
With over twenty years installing resin bound driveways across Essex and Suffolk, our team brings genuine expertise to every project. We were fitting resin bound surfaces before they became fashionable, which means we’ve learned what works and what doesn’t.
Our installers are trained in proper mixing ratios, base preparation, and finishing techniques. We understand that the material itself is excellent—when it’s installed correctly on a properly prepared base. That knowledge makes the difference between a driveway that lasts two decades and one that fails within five years.
From our base in Wickham Bishops, we cover the entire region. We’ll assess your existing surface, discuss your options honestly, and provide a detailed written quotation before any work begins.
How much does a resin bound driveway cost?
Costs vary significantly depending on whether you need full groundwork or an overlay, the size and complexity of the area, and your choice of aggregate. As a rough guide, overlay installations typically start around £50-70 per square metre, while full installations with excavation and base construction run £90-130 per square metre. Premium aggregates and complex shapes add to the cost. We provide detailed quotations so you know exactly what’s included.
How long does installation take?
Overlay installations on suitable existing surfaces typically complete in one to two days. Full installations requiring excavation and base construction take three to five days depending on size. Larger or more complex projects may take longer. We’ll provide a realistic timeline with your quotation.
Will my resin driveway fade?
UV-stable resins resist fading and yellowing significantly better than standard polyurethane resins. We use UV-stable systems as standard precisely because colour retention matters over the long term. Some very slight mellowing over many years is normal, but dramatic fading indicates inferior materials.
Can resin bound surfaces handle heavy vehicles?
Yes, when the base is specified appropriately. Standard domestic installations handle cars and vans without difficulty. Properties expecting heavier vehicles—delivery lorries, motorhomes, or frequent heavy traffic—need a more substantial base. We’ll discuss expected use during the survey and specify accordingly.
Do I need planning permission?
Generally not, provided the surfacing is permeable. Resin bound systems installed on a porous base qualify as permeable, meeting the requirements introduced in 2008. Exceptions may apply in conservation areas or for listed buildings. We can advise on your specific situation.
Where do you work?
From our base in Wickham Bishops, we cover Essex and Suffolk comprehensively.
