Tarmac Driveways in Essex and Suffolk
Tarmac remains the workhorse of driveway surfacing. It’s not glamorous—nobody chooses tarmac because they want to make a design statement—but it does the job reliably, affordably, and with minimal fuss. For many homeowners, that’s exactly what matters.
Stanley Paving has been laying tarmac driveways across Essex and Suffolk for over twenty years. We’re based in Wickham Bishops and work throughout both counties, handling everything from straightforward domestic driveways to larger surfacing projects.
What Tarmac Actually Is
Tarmac—short for tarmacadam—is crushed stone aggregate bound with bitumen. It arrives on site hot, typically between 130°C and 160°C, and needs to be laid and compacted before it cools.
Cost Effective
Tarmac is typically the most affordable option for a professionally installed driveway. The material costs less than block paving, natural stone, or resin bound, and installation is faster.
Quick Installation
A standard domestic driveway can be excavated, prepared, and surfaced in two to three days. You can walk on the surface after 24 hours and drive on it after 48 hours.
Built To Last
A properly installed tarmac driveway typically lasts 15 to 20 years with basic maintenance. The slight flexibility helps it cope with ground movement and temperature changes.
What Goes Underneath
This is where tarmac installations succeed or fail. The visible surface layer—the wearing course—is typically only 20 to 30mm thick. It can’t compensate for problems in what’s underneath. If the sub-base is inadequate, the driveway will develop ruts, cracks, and depressions regardless of how well the tarmac itself was laid.
For new installations, we excavate to depth—typically 200 to 250mm depending on ground conditions and expected use—and lay a compacted sub-base of MOT Type 1 aggregate. This crushed stone, properly compacted in layers, creates the stable foundation that everything else depends on.
How Installation Works
From excavation to final compaction, here’s what to expect when Stanley Paving transforms your driveway.
01
Excavation
Existing surfaces come up, along with any unsuitable material underneath. We coordinate skip or grab lorry collection to clear material efficiently.
02
Edge Restraints
Concrete kerbs or block paving borders go in next. These contain the sub-base during compaction and provide clean, defined edges.
03
Sub-Base
The sub-base is laid in layers and compacted using a vibrating roller. Each layer needs proper consolidation before the next goes down.
04
Tarmac Laying
The material arrives hot and needs to be spread, raked to level, and compacted before it cools. The binder course goes down first, followed by the wearing course.
Drainage Considerations
Tarmac is not permeable. Water runs off rather than through. This means drainage needs planning—both for the driveway’s longevity and to comply with regulations.
Since 2008, paving over more than five square metres of your front garden with non-permeable materials has required either planning permission or drainage that prevents water running onto the highway. The usual solutions are directing water to a lawn or planted area, installing channel drains connected to a soakaway, or using permeable edging.
Beyond regulations, good drainage protects your investment. Standing water accelerates surface deterioration, and water finding its way under the edges causes the sub-base to wash out. We design appropriate falls—typically around 1:60 gradient—and install drainage as needed.
Resurfacing vs Replacement
If your existing tarmac driveway is worn but the underlying structure is sound, resurfacing may be possible. This involves preparing the existing surface—cleaning, repairing any significant damage, applying a tack coat for adhesion—then laying a new wearing course on top.
Resurfacing costs less than full replacement and causes less disruption. But it only works if the base is genuinely stable. If there’s significant cracking, movement, drainage problems, or the surface has sunk in places, a new wearing course will simply inherit those problems. We assess honestly during the survey—sometimes resurfacing makes sense, sometimes it doesn’t.

Common Questions About Tarmac Driveways
How much does a tarmac driveway cost?
Costs depend on size, existing conditions, access, and specification. As a rough guide, expect £50-80 per square metre for a straightforward installation with standard specification. Complex sites, difficult access, or enhanced specifications cost more. Resurfacing, where appropriate, costs less. We provide detailed quotations after surveying your specific site.
How long will a tarmac driveway last?
Typically 15 to 20 years with appropriate installation and basic maintenance. Some last longer; others develop problems sooner if installation was inadequate or conditions are harsh. The quality of the sub-base preparation is the biggest factor affecting longevity.
Is tarmac suitable for heavy vehicles?
Yes, provided the specification is appropriate. Standard domestic specification handles cars, SUVs, and occasional delivery vehicles. If you regularly park motorhomes, trailers, or commercial vehicles, we specify a more robust sub-base and thicker wearing course to prevent damage.
Do I need planning permission?
Usually not for a standard driveway, but drainage regulations apply. Paving over more than five square metres with non-permeable materials requires either planning permission or drainage that prevents water running onto public land. We design installations to comply with these requirements.
Can you lay tarmac over my existing driveway?
Possibly. If the existing surface and base are structurally sound, resurfacing with a new wearing course can work well. If there’s significant damage, movement, or drainage problems, overlaying won’t solve them—you’d be better with a proper reconstruction. We assess honestly during the survey.
How soon can I use the driveway after installation?
Walking is usually fine after 24 hours. Light vehicles after 48 hours in normal conditions. During hot weather, fresh tarmac softens and we may recommend waiting longer before parking. Heavy vehicles should wait several days. We’ll provide specific guidance based on conditions at the time.
